Integrated process for ammonia inactivation of aflatoxin-contaminated corn and ethanol fermentation.

چکیده
A process is described for converting aflatoxin-contaminated corn to ethanol via combining ammonia inactivation with the liquefaction step of the ethanol fermentation process. Better ethanol yields were obtained when ammonia was added during liquefaction than when no ammonia was added. Aflatoxin B1 levels were reduced 80 to 85% by the process.

Ammoniation of corn contaminated with aflatoxin and its effects on growing rats.
Corn naturally contaminated with 2,000 ppb total aflatoxin was adjusted to 17% moisture and ammoniated (Am) with 1.5% (w/w) anhydrous ammonia in an attempt at detoxification. The ammonia treatment reduced the detectable concentration to 510 ppb total aflatoxins. Ninety-six male Sprague-Dawley rats (75 g avg) were randomly divided into eight treatment groups with 12 rats per treatment. A fortifi...
متن کاملThe Fate of Aflatoxin in Corn Fermentation
A lab-scale ethanol fermentation was investigated to determine where aflatoxin concentrated during each phase of production. Four corn samples with high levels of aflatoxin (ranging from 7750 17,208 parts per billion) and their replicates were compared with a replicated negative control. Fractions were taken from the fermented mash, distilled ethanol, stillage, and dried corn solids (DCS). Thes...
متن کاملAflatoxin in corn: ammonia inactivation and bioassay with rainbow trout.
Four samples of corn were compared with respect to their hepatocarcinogenicity in rainbow trout. One corn sample was found by chemical analysis to contain no detectable aflatoxin. A second sample was contaminated with aflatoxins at a level of 180 microgram/kg. Each of the above-mentioned samples was divided, and one-half of each was ammoniated. These four samples were added to a semipurified ba...
متن کاملStudies on Aflatoxin Detoxification in Shelled Corn by Ensiling
ince the mechanical picker-sheller has come into widespread use for harvesting field corn, farmers generally are confronted with the problem of safe storage of highmoisture shelled corn. The moisture content of field-shelled corn is often too high for direct binning, and storing such grain in regular farm bins without first lowering the moisture level is almost certain to result in spoilage. Mo...
متن کاملFate of Fumonisin B(1) in Naturally Contaminated Corn during Ethanol Fermentation.
Two lots of corn naturally contaminated with fumonisin B(1) (15 and 36 ppm) and a control lot (no fumonisin B(1) detected) were used as substrates for ethanol production in replicate 8.5-liter yeast fermentations. Ethanol yields were 8.8% for both the control and low-fumonisin corn, while the high-fumonisin corn contained less starch and produced 7.2% ethanol. Little degradation of fumonisin oc...
